As the firing progresses through the stack, the potters continue to throw armfuls of green brush on the fire. The brush comes from high on the mountain above Jatumpamba and by law (to avoid deforesting the mountain tops) must be transported by foot in bundles on their backs. The potters must make seventeen or more trips up and down the mountain to have enough fuel for a firing of this size.
